We built one of the world's most-used proof of vaccination verification solutions. Ensuring compliance with health standards & enhancing public safety, VaxiCode streamlined vaccination verification for millions of people during the COVID-19 pandemic.
In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Quebec’s Health Ministry (Ministère de la Santé et des Services Sociaux du Québec) needed a solution to support vaccination status verification in real time.
To build a secure and user-friendly solution that would enable citizens to easily keep their proof of vaccination on hand while making it easier for business owners to quickly and easily validate those health certificates.
By collaborating with Akinox, we created a solution that not only met the immediate needs during the pandemic, but also set a precedent for future digital health initiatives. The result: a system that was not only functional, intuitive, and reliable but also adopted widely.
To make the monumental task of implementing a province-wide system, we had to design a solution so secure, scalable, and user-friendly that anyone and any business at large could use it in their day-to-day. So we created an API-based solution and management software with 2 apps, each specifically tailored to its intended user base.

Our approach was grounded in user-centric design and agile development. We conducted extensive user research to understand the needs and pain points of both citizens and businesses. These insights ultimately guided our development process, ensuring the VaxiCode apps were tailored to meet real-world demands.

One key focus was on maintaining extremely rigorous privacy standards. Our team worked closely with international organizations leading the efforts to refine and harmonize standards for COVID-19 vaccination. The output: a system designed to meet North American and European data privacy standards while keeping accessibility requirements in mind.
The VaxiCode app was the first app of its kind to launch in North America, contributing to the health and safety of citizens. Thanks to our collaboration with Microsoft, Google, and Apple, we were able to fast-track the launch of this mission-critical app. Following its success in Quebec, the solution was rolled out in other provinces, including Saskatchewan and Newfoundland and Labrador, tallying over 50 million health certificate verifications monthly.
By creating a secure, efficient, and user-friendly solution, not only have we have helped Canadians navigate the pandemic, but set a new standard for digital health certificate management.
