Hosteling International was facing intense competition and needed to catch up with the needs of young travellers asking for an inspirational experience that they could access on the go. HI needed to make its web presence more accessible, consolidate its information, and provide more inspiration to be a more meaningful and relevant travel companion.
To help HI continue to lead, while improving their sales, we reimagined the traveller’s journey. We created an ecosystem of tools and platforms that made the awareness, consideration and conversion phase of their journey easier to navigate. First, we redesigned the accommodation search process so travellers could find a place to stay without being immediately redirected to a hostel's independent website.
We integrated HI’s new visual identity across the digital ecosystem, helping to define colours, typography and imagery optimized specifically for digital channels, as well as giving the brand an up to date makeover with a bold and modern UI design.
Considering our target is on-the-go most of the time, designing for mobile first was a no brainer. We made sure to build a contextual navigation system that allows for both exploration and booking efficiently, in a snap, without killing bandwidth usage.
For travellers wanting to get a preview of a destination, province, or just immerse themselves in Canadiana, we crafted an “explore” section, bridging the gap between large inspirational images and insightful articles from locals and well-informed travellers.
